Document search
Software that finds passages across large sets of files by meaning or keyword, not only by file name.
What it means
Document search lets a user ask where a clause, figure or phrase appears across thousands of files. Keyword search matches exact words. Semantic search matches meaning, so a question about termination rights can find a clause that never uses that phrase. Many research tools use both methods together.
For professionals, the value is coverage and speed. A team can search a data room or a case file in minutes instead of opening each document. The limit is recall: the search only returns what was indexed. Check whether scanned pages, tables and attachments were processed, and test a known clause to confirm the search finds it. Ask for the page number and the exact passage with every hit, since that is what a reviewer needs to confirm a finding. Re-run the search after new files arrive, because an index built last week will not show this week's uploads.
