Citation verification
Checking that each cited source exists and actually supports the sentence it is attached to.
What it means
Citation verification asks two questions for every claim. Does the source exist at the link given? Does the passage say what the report claims? A link that opens is not enough. The page may be about a different year, a different company or a different measure.
Good tools run this check automatically and show the matching passage next to the claim. Ask whether the tool compares quotes word for word against the page, and whether it reports a claim as unsupported rather than guessing. For high-stakes work, sample several claims by hand, because automated checks can miss context. A failed check should lead to a rewrite or removal of the claim, not a quiet edit that keeps the sentence. Record the date you checked each source, since pages change and a link can later say something different.
