AI research agent

Answer in brief

Software that plans and runs a multi-step research task on its own, then returns a written report.

What it means

An AI research agent breaks a question into smaller questions, decides which sources to read, and keeps going until it has enough material. Unlike a single chat reply, it can search, read, take notes and revisit weak spots during one run. Most agents end with a written report that lists the sources it used.

Quality depends on the planning, the source access and the checking step at the end. An agent that reads only open web pages will miss paywalled filings. One that skips verification can state a figure no source supports. Expect a longer wait than a quick chat answer, because the agent does more steps. Ask a vendor which sources the agent can reach and whether each claim is checked against its cited page. A useful test is to give the agent a question with a known answer and watch which sources it opens and which it skips.
